D-Day History at Normandy

Our day on the beaches of Normandy was Grandma Scotty's favorite day of the whole trip. From our three-windowed hotel rooms on Gold Beach to stops at Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, and Point du Hoc, we learned so much about the history of WWII. We ended the day at the Normandy American Cemetery for Taps.

The sunrise over the English Channel seen from Gold Beach was so stunning.

Our first stop was this tiny parish church on our left to learn about two brave medic paratroopers who provided medical care for American and German wounded. These young men held out for days with meager supplies and minimal training. They are honored today with this beautiful stained glass piece that illuminates the sancturary.

Explore the remarkable mission of the rangers assigned to take Point Du Hoc during WWII. Their objective was to destroy six long-range guns threatening the fleet's approach to Normandy. This courageous undertaking is a captivating chapter for any history enthusiast. The accompanying photos showcase daunting cliffs the rangers scaled and the formidable gun bunk they faced.

Megan gained valuable insights on this day, finding joy in the individual stories woven into a larger narrative. Scotty was thrilled to experience the beaches she had spent her life studying and teaching about as a middle school teacher. Our shared passion for learning and discovery created a memorable experience they would cherish forever.
